KITCHEN REFRESHING!

When we moved into our house it had popcorn ceilings in most of the rooms. I do not like popcorn ceilings. This stuff is the stuff if you touch it it is everywhere. So slowly I will be removing it. There will be an area in our dining room that it will remain for awhile.

This is a section in our dining room. It's a small enough project to get it done fairly fast.

Almost halfway.

Tim removed some old caulking. He spray foamed it instead.
I still need to pick out paint for this area. And I need to figure out what to do with the beams. They are super rough so cleaning them isn't easy without getting splinters or tearing up a cloth. The previous owners got paint on everything especially the beams and all the trim. Once again I will take one room at a time to cleanup the trim. The beams I am still pondering.

Now off to the kitchen. I put up plastic to help protect the dishes from the dust.

I'm so excited to take this down. It's work and gonna be more work getting everything done in the kitchen. It will be all worth it in the end. I have a vision of what I want it to look like.

This stain on the ceiling is a result of, well it don't matter. I just know I am happy to have it all down. In the future I know to not open fizzy homemade ginger-ale drinks in the house. So if anything happens from here on out I will be able to wipe it all off and repaint and the hubby will never know.

This will be exciting when it's done.

If anyone knows me, they know I don't like getting dirty. I know this isn't dirt but I am covered in white stuff all over my arms and in my hair.

Let me just say there is so much dust!!!

I am invested now. The damage on me is already done. The mess is all over the floor. It's all coming down today.
I am hot and sweaty and covered like I have flour all over me. I used a bucket to catch the stuff, but this is dust and goes everywhere. I knew it going in. I am still so glad it's coming down.

I had to wait until Tim could take the ceiling fan down.
I will be repainting this fan. My plans are to paint all the gold area.

So much dust. It sticks to every crack.

I would do a section and clean up as best as I could. I was trying to keep the dust down and from spreading through the house.

I am so close now. Tim took the ceiling fan down for me.

I got it all scraped now.

This already looks great!!

I will say having the normal lighting down has been harder to cook.
I need to get the lights repainted and a color picked out for the ceiling and walls.

Since Tim took the fan down for me I decided to paint it. I have looked at new ones but I just couldn't find any I liked. The one I have is fine except for the color. So I will just repaint it.

Sprayed and waiting for them to dry.

I need to pick out some paint for the kitchen. Decisions! It looks so much nicer with the ceiling scraped.

Choosing a color hasn't been easy.

It has taken 2 weeks to get to this point.

We had liked all the colors but 2 stood out to us.

The lighting has played a big factor into the color choice.
We painted more color on each wall of the 2 colors we liked best. And we waited for days.

We finally picked the one on the right.
We are painting the walls and ceiling the same color.

In the meantime, I have painted the wagon wheels and post for the wall table.

It's been almost a year but finally got around to it.
Sometimes projects take longer. It's all good.

We are adding more lights to the kitchen and I have decided to paint them too. They were white. We didn't think it would look good with the ceiling color being darker.

I noticed my hinges don't match the pulls on my cabinets.

So I had to paint them too.

Now I have the open concept going on. I am doing all the upper first. I will say it has been easier to unload the dishwasher and grabbing things out of the cabinets while cooking.

I washed the hinges and let them dry before I take them to the garage to spray them. Did I mention it is so cold outside.

Well that don't look pretty.

I choose to spray them black.

I got the upper ones put back up.
It already looks great. Yep, still haven't paint the ceiling or walls yet!

With the hinges being black it really makes the wood stand out.

Now I'm off to do the lower ones. I don't think I like this look with the lower cabinet doors off. I have less hinges to paint on the lower ones. And the weather has been a little warmer.

This is the cabinet that is below the sink. When Kaitlin and I got this off finally. Not sure how they put it on. It had 2 hinges and the the spring thing for the cabinet to open. I have never been able to use it as it only opened a 1/2 inch.
UM........
That is all I could say when I first saw it after taking off the containers. It's not stained or any protective coating on it.

I got 1st coat of black on the hinges.

I sanded the board and stained it.

I also touched up a few areas along the lower cabinets with stain.

I went back and put lacquer on everything to seal it.

Everything is dry and ready to start putting things back together.
I got the cabinet back on with the containers. I am finally able to use this. Looks good. I wasn't able to get all the black off of it but the containers hid it.

Now I am off to cut out 3 holes in the ceiling. I already have 2 holes from existing lights. We are gonna run the electricity off of them.

Tim removed the existing light fixture.

There will be a total of 3 lights over this area.
This will give us more lighting for the stove, wall oven/microwave and refrigerator.

There will be 2 lights above our breakfast bar.

Tim also removed the 2nd existing light fixture.

I'm smiling but it's harder than it looks to cut these holes.

The last of the holes are cut!!

Still not done with all the dust.
UGH!

We got the ceiling fan light hung back up just to have some better lighting in here. This is why we are adding more lights.
Kaitlin and I are tag teaming the painting. If we can get the ceiling painted we can get the lights all in.

Tim had hung this temporary light so we could get the ceiling painted. The lighting was great.

We got the ceiling and most of the walls painted. Our main goal was the ceiling so Tim could get the lights all hooked up. We need light to finish the rest of the painting.

WOW!! That is bright. And we have 3 more to hook up.
Tim is wondering if it might be too much lighting.

When the light is on you can't even see the color. The lights look like they are up in the ceiling not flush like they are.

All 5 can lights and ceiling fan are installed.
Lights on.

Lights off.

Now to finish painting the walls.

We have finished painting. Now putting everything back together again.

I love how all the colors have brightened up everything in the kitchen. It's one of my happy places. Besides, I spend a lot of my time in the kitchen.

The cabinets look nice and shiny.

Walls look great. The color is perfect for this space.

We have future plans on upper cabinets above the table.

I still need to put the trim piece back up.
It is all coming together one piece at a time.

The trim piece is still missing, but the kitchen looks so good.
I really like the color. I bet you all thought it was gonna look so dark.

I am working on staining the crown molding piece.

Tim got me a piece of wood cut to put above the microwave/wall oven.
I am staining it and gonna lacquer it. We won't see it but it will make it easier to wipe off when cleaning.

I can't believe that the trim piece was put in with no stain to match the cabinets or sealer on it.

Now we wait until it is dry before we can put it back up.

This board is good and sealed.

Trim piece is back up.
And I have already hung pictures up.

The piece of wood Tim cut, we got it installed.

It looks so good and can't even see the wood.

We are so glad we got this project done.
Now I am off to my next project.
